Axel Kandell (1916-2003) was a Swedish architect, mostly famous for his villas and summer houses around Sweden. During 1960's he also contributed to the city planning of Sköndal, in the outskirts of Stockholm.

1948, the same year he earned his diploma as architect from KTH Royal institute of Technology in Stockholm, he created the armchair CATTELIN for Gemla.
The chair was based on the early 1900's Vienna café chairs, shaped into the robust chair it is today.
The history tells, to convince the client Restaurant Cattelin in Stockholm, Axel Kandell threw out the chair through the window several stories to show the chairs superb durability. It didn't break.

Still today CATTELIN is one of Gemlas most appreciated models.
